Mr Simon Butler
Simon Butler is Director and Publisher of the Halsgrove Publishing Group. Along with publishing many thousands of titles, his career has involved the authorship of a number of books including co-authoring Dartmoor Century I and Dartmoor Century II which promoted the original establishment of the Dartmoor Archive. Simon holds several directorships in Arts-related organisations and co-founded the annual Delamore Arts Exhibition. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2006. Simon is married with three grown-up children and lives on Dartmoor.
Mr John Earle
John Earle has lived on or near Dartmoor since the 1940s. He is well known for his television work including his films "Walks on Dartmoor". He has written, among other books, five walking guides for the moor. Since retiring from television he has been Head of an Outdoor Education Centre at Widecombe. He was on the Dartmoor National Park Committe and the Access Forum for several years He has a deep love and understanding of Dartmoor and has enjoyed the important work of the Dartmoor Trust and Archive since its foundation in 1996.
Mr Bill Hitchens
Bill commenced his working life running a family agricultural business covering a large part of Southwest Devon and Dartmoor and later developed an equestrian and pet supply business in the same area, alongside a small builder's merchant outlet at Roborough. He owns a small-holding which qualifies him as a commoner with rights on Roborough Down where he served as association treasurer for 30 years.
Bill joined Bickleigh Parish Council in 1983 and become Chairman in 1987. He was elected to South Hams District Council in 1991 and appointed Deputy Leader in 1994. He has held a variety of senior offices including Chairman of the Council and is currently Deputy Leader once again. Bill is the Dartmoor National Park representative who will serve until the next DNPA AGM.
Mr Philip Sanders
Philip Sanders Started training and assessing for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme in about 1973/4 and is
still actively involved in this with a particular emphasis on the expedition, map reading, compass skills
elements. I currently assess at Bronze, Silver and Gold Award levels.
From about 1974 for a period in excess of 25 years I was initially a team member and then latterly a
search coordinator and controller for the Dartmoor Rescue Group as well as being its Chairman for a
number of years. Philip is the current Chairman of the Dartmoor Trust. Philip is also a Devon County and West Devon councillor.
Lieutenant Colonel Tony Clark OBE
Brought up in Okehampton, Tony returned to Dartmoor 17 years ago to manage
military interests on Dartmoor. He is closely involved with the Ten Tors
Challenge, his local commoners association and is interested in farming,
photography, natural history, swimming and skiing. The human, and
particularly soldiers', use of the moor is his current fascination, with the
intent of writing a book on the military use of Dartmoor.
