Packhorse bridge

A packhorse bridge on Dartmoor. The name of this particular bridge is not known, though it may well be somewhere along the River Dart. These packhorse bridges are common on the moor; they are wide enough for laden packhorses and small carts to pass over. They mainly date from the late medieval/ early modern period and are well built; they often replaced earlier, less substantial bridges (e.g. wood) and were vital for transport and communication over the moor.
